DEMO 3 Master Course
During the DEMO Master course the knowledge from DEMO Bachelor is deepened and broadened. Most notably the student learns to make the Fact Model and the Action Model himself. After completing the course the student is prepared to take the DEMO Master exam.
To enroll in the DEMO Master exam it is mandatory to have taken the DEMO Bachelor exam.
What is DEMO?
DEMO (Design and Engineering Methodology for Organisations) is the leading methodology in the new discipline of Enterprise Engineering (EE). In DEMO, an organisation is primarily considered as a purposefully designed system. Changing the organisation thus means re-designing and subsequently re-engineering it. Only in this way can unity and integration be achieved and maintained.
The philosophy of DEMO is that people are the ‘pearls’ of every organisation. Equipped with the right authority and acting from the corresponding responsibility, these people bring about the services they deliver to each other, in social interaction. The philosophy therewith encourages sense making and collaboration.
The theory of DEMO is that this social interaction takes place in universal patterns, called transactions. Business processes are clear tree structures of transactions, not mind-boggling railroad yards. ICT applications are supporting tools for people, they do not take over responsibility.
The essence of every organisation is that it consists of a network of transactions and actor roles, independent of any implementation. This essence is captured in four integrated models: the Construction Model (actor roles and transactions), the Process Model (business events and business processes), the Fact Model (business objects and business facts) and the Action Model (business rules and work instructions). Because the models are formalised, ICT applications can directly be generated from them, and the dynamic behavior of the organisation can be studied through simulation.
What does DEMO offer you?
• Unequaled reduction of complexity
• Broad overview and deep insight in your operations
• Transparency of responsibilities and interactions
• Clear identification of process and data ownership
• Comprehensive, coherent, consistent and yet concise models
• Employees become the pearls of your organisation
• Keeping control over the most complicated changes
Examples of DEMO in practice
• Application portfolio analysis based the essential model (Rijkswaterstaat 2007)
• Unique survey of and insight in post merger integration (Air France/KLM 2010)
• New energy from connecting management and shop floor (Marechaussee 2011)
The course DEMO Master (download as PDF, in dutch) continues where the course DEMO Bachelor has ended. The added value is threefold.
First, you will acquire a more thorough understanding of Enterprise Engineering and its theoretical pillars: Enterprise Ontology, Enterprise Architecture and Enterprise Governance.
Next, you will learn to make, verify and validate the other two DEMO-models, i.e. the Fact Model and the Action Model, in which you apply the so-called OER-method to some cases. This will help you to develop a deep understanding of the role of all four models (ConstructionMoel, ProcessModel, FactModel and ActionModel), as well as their integrated coherence.
Thirdly you will augment your competence level in the use of DEMO from the level of just applying, this is dealing with rather well-described cases, as you did in DEMO-Bachelor, up to the level of analysis, which means you are able to deal with not-completely-written cases.
Summarized, you will be equipped with knowledge, competences and skills with which you can excel as independent working professional in the most complicated change projects in organisations.
For whom is the course intended?
The DEMO Master course is intended for practitioners in the field of organisation and ICT (like enterprise architects / consultants, business architects / analysts / consultants, information managers, business process managers, and quality managers) who need to be educated more profoundly in their field of practice, and who particularly look for a solid methodological foundation of their profession.
Other course information
A DEMO Mastercourse consists of three contact days and three days self-study. Therefore, the contact days are normally spread over a number of weeks. Prerequisite for enrolling in a DEMO Master course is that you did follow a DEMO-Bachelor course.
Next to (digital) handouts, the course material consists of the book Enterprise Ontology, 2nd edition of Jan Dietz.
The Enterprise Engineering Institute regularly (about 3-4 times per year) organises written exam sessions. They can also be taken at distance. If you pass the exam, you receive the DEMO Master diploma and you will be recorded in the register of Certified DEMO Masters.
